This month's Pub of the Month features
The Goodmanham Arms at Goodmanham.

Just outside Market Weighton the village of Goodmanham boasts one of the oldest churches in the country, dating back to Anglo-Saxon times. Just opposite is the village pub, The Goodmanham Arms, which was recently featured on the BBC TV program "Countryfile".

The special attraction are the home-brewed beers, at least one of which is always available, together with Theakstones Best Bitter and Black Sheep Bitter, both from Masham.  With names like Randy Monk, Choirboys Dread and Filthy Habit, the home-brewed beers keep alive the memory of one of the early incumbents of the Church, notorious for his sexual improprieties.

The pub itself has two rooms, a larger one created by removing some internal walls, with an impressive open fireplace, and a smaller bar. Both have original tiled or wooden floors and a host of interesting features. The atmosphere is extremely friendly - in fact I would go so far as to say that this is one of the friendliest pubs I have ever visited. It really is what a traditional village pub used to be, the social heart of the village. Peter and Irene behind the bar know everyone there, and strangers are rapidly made to feel welcome as if they'd been drinking there for years.

There are regular social evenings, family celebrations thrown open to all-comers, quiz nights etc. There is always something going on there and it is well worth a visit (or two).
